What the New Oregon Medical Board Medical Chaperone Rule Means for You

We want to inform you of a new regulation mandated by the Oregon Medical Board (OMB) and our commitment to ensuring the highest level of care and comfort during your visits to our office.
The Medical Chaperone rule outlined in OMB 847-010-0130 aims to protect the well-being and safety of patients during medically necessary breast, genital, and rectal examinations.

What the Medical Chaperone Rule Does

  1. The regulation applies to patients of all ages, from newborn to adults.
  2. A trained chaperone will be offered for genital and rectal examinations regardless of gender; and breast examinations during and after puberty for patients who identify as female.
  3. The medical chaperone will witness the sensitive exam with a direct line of sight.
  4. It is your choice whether to have a medical chaperone present or not. Patients 15 years of age and older can consent or refuse for themselves.

Our Commitment to You

As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritize patient-centered care, we have implemented the following measures:
  1. Professional Chaperones: We have trained and designated medical chaperones who are available to be present during sensitive examinations or procedures to ensure a safe and comfortable environment. They are educated on the importance of patient comfort, privacy, and dignity throughout all aspects of medical care.
  2. Open Communication: We encourage open dialogue. If you have any concerns or questions about the presence of a chaperone, please discuss it with our medical team. Your comfort matters to us.
  3. Respect for Patient Preferences: We recognize that every patient and family has unique preferences and comfort levels when it comes to the presence of a chaperone. You have the right to decline the presence of a chaperone. If you have specific chaperone requests we will do our best to accommodate you as staffing allows.
  4. Confidentiality and Privacy: Rest assured that all information shared during examinations or discussions with our healthcare providers, chaperones, or staff will remain confidential.
Please be assured that our commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care remains unchanged. We believe that compliance with the OMB’s Chaperone Rule will enhance the trust and confidence you have placed in East Portland Pediatrics.
If you have any further questions or concerns regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact our office. We value your feedback and are dedicated to addressing any issues promptly and effectively. Thank you for your understanding and continued trust in our office. We look forward to serving you and your family with the highest standard of care.
